FIVE POINTS PARTNERSHIP: The Five Points Farm Market
is doing well. Come and visit. They have fresh local organic vegetables,
fresh local seafood, Holy Rollers Bakery, a fantastic Café, and much more.
BUSINESS: 1) Our 14th Annual Scholarship Banquet on June 5th was a success with 29 in attendance as we introduced our three scholarship recipients. CJ Zongolowicz, Jr. attended to assist in presenting the scholarship in honor of his recently deceased father who was one of the best football players ever to attend NHS. 2) Mike Bradshaw reported that we added a small amount to the endowment fund and put $17,600 into a new CD. 3) Lee Gallop ’61, who set up our Alumni web site passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. The Alumni appreciate the many hours he spent putting the site together. 4) With the passing of Lee Gallop, Rick West will be contacting the company the web site is contracted with and will attempt to update the site. If anyone out there can help Rick with this task, please contact him at (757) 495-0740 or at NorviewAlumni@cox.net since he has no knowledge of doing this. PLEASE HELP!!

Ted ’68 and Brenda Randall Cook ’69 met with Dave Cochran ’64 and his wife,
Faye at a restaurant in Locust Grove (a small town halfway between their two
homes) for dinner on Sept. 15th.
They had previously only met on FaceBook. They enjoyed each other’s company
immensely. This shows that no matter
what years you attended NHS; it is a tie we all enjoy. I love meeting NHS alums that I have never
previously met. We always have a lot to

Tappanhannock- Mrs. Lucile Portlock, retired Librarian from Norview High School, passed away Friday, October 9, 2009. She was the victim of an aggressive form of kidney cancer. Her daughter, Lucile (Class of 1961), from St. Thomas, USVI was with her. Many Norviewites remember Mrs. Portlock as most helpful and always smiling advocate of the students best interest. Mrs. Portlock attended the 45th Class of 1961 Reunion in 2006.
A remembrance and celebration of her life will be held Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2:30 p.m. at her home in Tappahannock, 417 Prince St., and a graveside service will be held in Norfolk later this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Essex County Library at 117 N. Church Lane, Tappahannock, VA 22460 and The Haven, P.O. Box 1267, Warsaw, VA 22572.
The Alumni Association wants to amend the articles of incorporation in order to qualify for 501 (C) (3) tax status allowing all contribution to be tax deductible. In order to do this, we need the members to vote to make these changes. Here are the proposed changes. If you wish to vote in favor of these changes, no action is needed. If you wish to vote against making these changes, do so by notifying Rick West at (757) 495-0740 or at NorviewAlumni@cox.net. Only those who have paid their 2009 dues are eligible to vote.
ARTICLES OF AMENDMENT OF
NORVIEW HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION & FRIENDS’ INC.
The undersigned, on behalf of the corporation set forth below, pursuant to 13.1-807 of the Code for a nonstock corporation, states as follows:
The name of the corporation prior to filing is NORVIEW HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION & FRIENDS, INC.
The articles to be amended are articles of incorporation, which became effective on 7 July, 1998.
The name of the corporation shall be amended to: NORVIEW HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION, INC.
Preamble currently states: This is to certify that the undersigned desires to and does hereby associate and establish a corporation under the provisions of Chapter 10 of Title 13.1 of the Code of Virginia, toward that end, by these Articles of incorporation, sets forth the following:
Shall be amended to: This is to certify that the undersigned desires to and does hereby associate and establish a Non-Profit, nonstock corporation under the provisions of Chapter 10 of Title 13.1 of the Code of Virginia, and section 501 (C) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code, exclusively for charitable purposes, including, for such purposes, the making of distributions to organizations that qualify as exempt organizations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code and toward that end, by these Articles of incorporation, sets forth the following:
Article II currently states: The corporation is to have one class of members and the qualifications of the rights of the members of the class shall be that each member shall have graduated from Norview High School, Norfolk, Virginia and be in good standing with the Norview Alumni Association. All members of this class shall have the right to vote, to be elected to office and to be a member of the Board of Directors.

No part of the net earnings of the corporation shall inure to the benefit of, or be distributable to its members, trustees, officers, or other private persons, except that the corporation shall be authorized and empowered to pay reasonable compensation for services rendered and to make payments and distributions in furtherance of the purposes set forth in the Preamble hereof. No substantial part of the activities of the corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the corporation shall not participate in, or intervene in (including the publishing or distribution of statements) any political campaign on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. Notwithstanding any other provision of these articles, the corporation shall not carry on any other activities not permitted to be carried on (a) by a corporation exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code, or (b) by a corporation, contributions to which are deductible under section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code.
Article VIII shall be added: Upon the dissolution of the corporation, all assets shall be distributed to Norview High School, Norfolk, Virginia to be used for scholarships for seniors of Norview High School or for the betterment of Norview High School activities. Any such assets not so disposed of shall be disposed of by a Court of Competent Jurisdiction of the county in which the principal office of the corporation is then located, exclusively for such purposes or to such organization or organizations, as said Court shall determine, which are organized and operated exclusively for such purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, or the corresponding section of any future federal tax code.

Class of 1964 Graduate, Mary Carolyn Reavis “Jodi” Rell, serves as the 87th Governor of Connecticut. She attended Old Dominion University until she married Lou Rell, a naval aviator, in 1967. In 1969 they moved to Brookfield, CT. Serving as Lt. Governor for nine years she became Governor in 2004 after the previous governor resigned. She is the first woman Republican Governor of Connecticut, and has enjoyed the highest approval rating (80%) in the state’s history. She was elected to her second full 4 year term in 2006.
Class of 1973 Graduate, voted the “Most Likely to Succeed”, Leroy Roundtree Hassell, Sr. serves as the first African-American Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court. The senior member of the court was elected by his peers in 2002 to a twelve year term. Dr. Hassell attended the University of Virginia for his undergraduate degree where he earned a BA in 1977. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in1980. After law school, Hassell worked for the Richmond branch of McGuire Woods where he made partner in seven years. He served as chairman of the National School Board. He currently serves on the Board of Visitors of the Regent University School of Law.
One of our classmates was beseiged by Hurricane Charley in August, 2004. His home was totally destroyed and required him to reside in damaged camper for 7months and then 200 miles away at his sister-in-law’s home. Consequently, his copy of the 1961 yearbook was destroyed. He desires a copy if one is available from a classmate or members of the classes from 1957 – 1965 if possible. Contact: Webmaster@norview61.org
Lewis Benton “Bud” Stevens Jr., 90, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009, in Martha Jefferson Hospital. Charlottesville, VA. He graduated from Lawrence High School, Falmouth, MA from 1932 to 1936 where he lettered in four sports and was later inducted into the High School Hall of Fame. He attended Worchester Academy and played football and was accepted on a football scholarship to University of Virginia. World War II interrupted college, during which time he served tours of duty in North Africa, Italy and France, receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre. After the war, he returned to UVA, completing his master’s studies in 1948. He began his teaching career in Clifton Forge and moved to Norfolk teaching English at Norview High School until his retirement in 1985.
Mrs. Ardath Jones, 95, passed away June 7,2009. Mrs. Jones retired from the Norfolk Public Schools at Norview High School where she was a beloved teachers. She taught “Civics” and was the faculty yearbook sponsor. She graduated with her teaching degree from the then Radford College, Women’s Division of the Virginia Polytechnical Institute… now Radford University. In recent years she was active in civic projects, and was a regular attendee at Norview High Class Reunions.
